Nouakchott: Awareness and reforestation campaign in El Mina on the occasion of World Environment Day

To mark World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, 2026, the NGO Naforé, in partnership with the Nouakchott Coastal Development Company (SALN), organized an awareness and reforestation campaign at the El Warf School in the El Mina district.
The main activities carried out during this day were as follows:
- Reforestation of the school’s perimeter fence (104 plants: Nîmes, Moringa, Flamboyant, Lemon, Fucus, and Papaya);
- Organization of awareness sessions for students, teachers, and the Parents’ Association on the topics of combating desertification, waste management, and coastal protection;
- Distribution of 30 copies of training modules;
- Provision of six 80-liter bins for sorting and storing solid waste;
- Creation of a school club dedicated to promoting good environmental practices;
- Organization of an awareness-raising football match.
This activity mobilized several institutional and community stakeholders, including:
- The Deputy Hakem of the El Mina district;
- The Director of El Warf School;
- The Inspector of the Environment and Sustainable Development for the El Mina district;
- The Secretary General of the Departmental Inspectorate of National Education;
- Representatives of the Parents’ Association;
- Teams from SALN and the NGO Naforé.
The official launch of the campaign was presided over by the Deputy Governor of the El Mina district, Mr. Ahmed Abderrahmane, who symbolically planted the first tree.
Through this initiative, NAFORE and its partners reaffirm their commitment to environmental protection, combating desertification, and strengthening the involvement of local communities, particularly young people, in the sustainable preservation of the Nouakchott coastline.
