NAFORE participated in a multi-stakeholder workshop for reflection and co-creation of the future national strategy on blue carbon in Mauritania, organized under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD), with the support of technical and financial partners.
This workshop is part of the “Valuation of Blue Carbon in the Banc d’Arguin National Park (PNBA)” project, funded by the BRIDGE Project Innovation Fund, with co-financing from the BACoMaB Trust Fund. It aims to lay the groundwork for a national strategy to enhance the value of coastal and marine ecosystems, particularly mangroves, seagrass beds, and salt marshes, recognized for their essential role in carbon sequestration and storage.
Discussions focused on:
- Analysis of the political, legal, and institutional framework of carbon markets in Mauritania;
- Review of relevant international instruments and their applicability to the national context;
- Sharing of best practices in the sub-region;
- The development of recommendations to strengthen blue carbon governance;
- The definition of a roadmap and preliminary budget for the development of the national blue carbon strategy.
NAFORE’s participation in this workshop reflects its ongoing commitment to protecting ecosystems, combating climate change, and promoting innovative financing solutions for the benefit of sustainable development and local communities.
