Training workshops on the strategic challenges of the Mauritanian oceans and coastline
Posted in :
From December 22 to 24, 2025, the Network of Actors for the Safeguarding of the Mauritanian Coastline (RASLiM) organized a series of strategic workshops at the Sunset Hotel, with the support of the PRCM and the participation of civil society organizations, public institutions, and international partners. NAFORE was honored to participate with two representatives, in order to strengthen its capacities in coastal protection and maritime governance.
This training aimed to equip local stakeholders with in-depth knowledge of ocean governance through the BBNJ Treaty, risk management related to oil and gas activities, prevention of and response to marine pollution through the POLMAR Plan, and the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) according to the IUCN framework.
- The first day was dedicated to the BBNJ Treaty, with a presentation of the challenges of the high seas, an explanation of its key mechanisms, and discussions on the role of civil society in its implementation. • The second day focused on the Oil & Gas sector and the POLMAR Plan, including a life cycle analysis of oil and gas projects, the identification of environmental risks, and a detailed presentation of the plan to combat accidental marine pollution.
- The third day focused on Nature-based Solutions, with a clarification of principles, a presentation of the IUCN Global Standard, and concrete case studies accompanied by practical workshops.
The workshops adopted a participatory and interactive methodology, combining illustrated technical presentations, group work adapted to the Mauritanian context, role-playing and simulations, as well as valuable opportunities for sharing experiences among field workers.
Thanks to this training, our team deepened its understanding of the legal and technical frameworks for marine protection, identified concrete courses of action for our coastal projects, strengthened our network of partners and local expertise, and consolidated our role in advocating for sustainable coastal management.
NAFORE wishes to express its gratitude to RASLiM for organizing and inviting the event, to PRCM for its strategic and financial support, to the expert trainers for the quality of their presentations, and to all participants for the enriching discussions.
These workshops reinforce our commitment to integrating the knowledge gained into our field activities, developing pilot projects inspired by Nature-based Solutions, actively participating in RASLiM’s thematic working groups, and contributing to national advocacy for coastal protection.
Follow our upcoming field activities!
